چکیده

The drag force associated with gravity waves generated by flow over the world’s mountain ranges tends to decelerate the large-scale atmospheric circulation, and must be parametrized in global weather prediction and climate models, since it is still not adequately resolved by those models. Such parametrizations have proved to be of crucial importance for improving the skill of weather forecasts. However, existing drag parametrizations are very crude, neglecting, for example, the impact of any wind variations with height on the value of the surface drag, and on the way the momentum flux associated with the waves is affected by so-called critical levels. A considerable imbalance is known to exist in the most recent evaluations of the earth’s angular momentum budget, and it is possible that imperfections in the representation of gravity wave drag are responsible for it.

Atmospheric Gravity Waves and their Effects on the Global Circulation

A fundamental difficulty in modeling global atmospheric circulation is the strong interaction among motions on a wide range of space and time scales. Explicit numerical representation of all the spatial scales that determine the global atmospheric circulation is impractical. An example of such difficulties is the effect of small-scale inertia-gravity waves on the circulation. Inertia-gravity wa...

P2.1 Redistribution of Angular Momentum in a Global Forecast Model Due to Change in Drag Parameterizations

Contemporary numerical models of the global atmosphere include parameterizations of various drag mechanisms, e.g., orographic and convective gravity wave drag (GWD), mountain drag, surface friction drag, and artificial model top drag. These mechanisms, except for friction drag, directly affect the magnitude of the polar night jet, whose variation significantly affects the tropospheric circulati...

Characteristics of atmospheric gravity waves observed using the MU (Middle and Upper atmosphere) radar and GPS (Global Positioning System) radio occultation

The wind velocity and temperature profiles observed in the middle atmosphere (altitude: 10-100 km) show perturbations resulting from superposition of various atmospheric waves, including atmospheric gravity waves. Atmospheric gravity waves are known to play an important role in determining the general circulation in the middle atmosphere by dynamical stresses caused by gravity wave breaking. In...

Constraints on Wave Drag Parameterization Schemes for Simulating the Quasi-Biennial Oscillation. Part I: Gravity Wave Forcing

Parameterization schemes for the drag due to atmospheric gravity waves are discussed and compared in the context of a simple one-dimensional model of the quasi-biennial oscillation (QBO). A number of fundamental issues are examined in detail, with the goal of providing a better understanding of the mechanism by which gravity wave drag can produce an equatorial zonal wind oscillation. The gravit...
